It was Blake who hit upon the solution for how we could explain my sister’s absence. When night fell, he abducted a girl from the local village. She was the same height and build as Tabitha. With some work, we managed to make her hair the same length as my sister’s. I chose my sister’s favourite dress for her to wear. It was a beautiful emerald green. A stout oak stave and some knife work were enough to mar her face to be almost unrecognisable. Her eyes, though, this doe eyed farmer’s daughter had brown eyes, not the brilliant blue of my sister. So I removed the eyes for later immolation.

Once our work was finished, we disposed of her body in the lake. I wanted to hurl it into the centre of the lake, but for our plan to work, Blake advised it was better to place it close to the shore as it wouldn’t float to the surface for a few days.

We couldn’t wait.

This morning, I instructed my son Reginald to play by the lake. When he finds the body, we’ll have the evidence of suicide. A crime against the family name, to be sure, but better than carnal congress outside of wedlock. It might also toughen my son. He carries an innate weakness of character that is of growing concern to me.
